Ty's Take

County commissioners calling the Phelps-Dodge property a "historical and ecological asset" is the kind of language you use when you're trying to have it both ways—honoring what the mine meant to Silver City's bones while keeping the door open for what it might become. The timing matters, what with fire season ramping up and the Forest Service already watching the Gila like a hawk. Fact is, this town's future probably doesn't live in either/or thinking. It lives in figuring out how to hold onto the grit that built us while protecting the wild country that's keeping us alive now. The new Comprehensive Plan suggests somebody's thinking that way. Whether we can actually pull it off is another matter entirely.
