The Bear Fire's still eating landscape up there, and that June 13 blowup reminds us why this country demands respect—and why we can't afford to be casual about what happens in those canyons above town. Fire doesn't care much about the line between the Gila Wilderness and somebody's back forty, and it sure doesn't wait for us to get our act together on fuel management or evacuation routes. Silver City's been lucky so far, but luck's just another word for preparation that hasn't failed yet, and this is the season when preparation matters most.
