Small towns live and die by who's wearing the badge, and when a police chief walks out the door—especially under the kind of circumstances that make a city council reach for the termination papers—everybody in the county feels it. Hurley's got maybe 1,300 people and about as much margin for error as a miner has for a loose rope, which is to say none. We don't know yet what led the council to this, and we won't speculate on personalities, but the real question is whether whoever fills that slot next understands they're not just keeping the peace in a small border town—they're keeping trust. That's harder to rebuild than any road or any mine shaft.
