Ty's Take
There's a particular weight to Memorial Day out here, where half the county seems to have someone buried at Fort Bayard and the other half is still out working the land those people fought for. This year's ceremony falls right as fire season tightens its grip—which is exactly why that second meeting on mitigation matters as much as the wreaths do. You can't honor the past and ignore the present, and Silver City knows it. The same folks who'll stand at those graves on the 26th are the ones who need to be paying attention when the fire people talk about defensible space and watershed protection. That's not contradiction. That's just living in a place where history and survival keep the same schedule.
