Ty's Take

The Hummingbird Fire got some rain yesterday, which around these parts counts as news worth noting—not because a few afternoon thunderstorms solve anything, but because in this corner of New Mexico, we've learned to mark every drop. Meanwhile, the Tour of the Gila wrapped up with its usual parade of cyclists cranking through downtown and out toward the Gila, a reminder that this town's gotten pretty good at being two places at once: the old mining country and something altogether different. The real test, though, is whether we can figure out what comes next—and the D2 commission race heating up over mines and the hospital suggests we're still arguing about whether Silver City looks backward or forward. A doctor organizing hair donations for kids fighting illness, a judge clearing officials of wrongdoing—these are the smaller currents that run underneath. Either way, the town's moving.
