The Hummingbird Fire crossing 4,000 acres and Stage 1 restrictions already in place around Bayard and Santa Clara—that's the real weather forecast for Grant County right now, and it's not the kind that changes with the season. We're looking at another spring where the dry comes first and the rain comes late, if it comes at all, which means every spark matters and every acre of brush matters more. The good news is we've got folks who know how to manage this land, from the fire crews to the wilderness rangers, but the harder truth is we're managing it in a new climate now, not the one our grandparents knew. The pipeline proposal moving through the south county isn't going away, the governor will be here in two years to tell WNMU graduates what they should care about, and somewhere in all of that, our communities are trying to figure out how to keep growing without burning up.
