Ty's Take
There's a lot of talk in the letters this week about what "responsible" means when it comes to building in Chaffee County, and that's worth paying attention to because the word gets stretched like taffy depending on who's using it. Zoning fights are never really about zoning, they're about whether a place stays recognizable to the people who chose to live here, and whether the newcomers and the old-timers can figure out how to share what makes this valley work. The ballot questions coming up will matter too, but most folks won't think much about redistricting or TABOR until they're standing in the voting booth. What might stick with people longer is the Blue Zones program the aging agency just launched, because that's about actual quality of life right now, not some theoretical version of what Salida could become. Growth is coming whether we vote for it or not, but the question is whether we're thoughtful about it or just let it happen to us.
