Ty's Take

The ArtWalk coming up the second weekend of October used to be the thing that told you summer was officially done and the real Salida came back out to play, and thirty-three years in it still does that, though you can feel the crowd growing different every year. Meanwhile the town council is staring down a 4 million dollar water tank project that Mesa needs built, which is exactly the kind of infrastructure bill that doesn't make anyone's heart race but keeps the lights on and the taps running when Buena Vista and every developer in the valley keeps pushing more people up here. The farm-to-school money growing in our school district is a small bright spot, at least, something that ties kids back to ranching country and water and where food comes from, which feels important when the Front Range is busy remaking the valley into something else. Between the elections, the tourism budget talk, and the infrastructure we're scrambling to pay for, there's a lot of conversation happening about what kind of place this is going to be in another five or ten years. The ArtWalk, though, that's still ours.
