Ty's Take

There's a particular kind of activism that takes root in mountain towns, the kind that shows up not with grand speeches but with a wrench in hand and a bike frame that somebody else was ready to throw away. That nonprofit pedaling affordable bikes around Salida this week, the LGBTQ+ Fund cutting checks to neighbors, GreenLatinos organizing on climate, the community coffee where folks actually show up to talk road work and senior housing instead of just posting about it online, these aren't separate movements. They're the same muscle flexing in different ways, the muscle that says we're building something here together, not just living on top of each other. It's the opposite of the extremism piece running alongside all this, the kind of thing that thrives when people feel like nobody's listening anyway. Around here, we've still got room to listen. Long may that last.
