Salida's city council punted on wildfire code changes this week, tabling the vote 4-1 in what felt less like a decision and more like a delay tactic. That's the thing about fire mitigation in mountain towns: everybody agrees it matters until you're the one clearing defensible space around your own property, and then the conversation gets a lot quieter. Meanwhile, the county fair's coming up Thursday with livestock shows that'll draw families from across Chaffee County, the kind of event that reminds you this is still ranch country underneath all the galleries and brewery patios. Up in Buena Vista they're moving forward with dam improvements and sorting out their election schedule, and down here our hospital board's reporting solid June numbers and rolling out a new patient records system. It's the rhythm of a small valley in summer: some things move, some things wait, and the river keeps running.
