The county fair this week does what it's always done: brings everybody together for a couple days and reminds you why you live here. You've got the 4-H kids showing rabbits and poultry, families lining the fence for the rodeo, folks walking the grounds between the livestock pens and the food booths. It's honest work on display, the kind of thing that doesn't change much year to year, and maybe that's the whole point when everything else around the valley seems to be shifting fast. Meanwhile the county's dealing with fire season up near Leadville and over in Browns Canyon, and the towns are paving streets and building pocket parks to handle more visitors every summer. Those are the growing pains of a place people want to be in. But Wednesday at the fairgrounds, at least, you can still find the thing that brought most of us here in the first place.
