The fair comes to Chaffee County this week like it always does, with 4-H kids and their rabbits and the kind of horse work that's kept ranches running through three generations of boom and bust. Meanwhile up in Buena Vista the trustees are wrestling with short-term rentals and dam projects, and down the valley Ada's thinking about what seasonal dining looks like when the rafting season ends and the river quiets down. These aren't separate conversations, really. They're all the same argument about what this valley gets to be: a place where people live and work the land and build something that lasts, or something else entirely. The Aspen Acres fire is still eating up ground, but the county fair moves forward anyway, because that's how you live in a river valley where fire and water and weather make the rules.
