Ty's Take

Early season bears coming down lower than usual means the usual warnings: don't leave garbage out, keep your distance, and for God's sake don't get between a sow and her cubs. But what it really means is the food sources up high are thin this year, which ought to tell us something about the condition of the country we're counting on to keep this place running. When grizzlies start showing up at the edges of town earlier and hungrier than normal, it's worth asking what that says about last summer's fires and this year's water. We can manage the bears, most of the time. What we can't manage is the country they're supposed to stay in.
