Ty's Take

The ponderosa pines dying across Colorado hit different when you can see them from your porch. That slow burn through the San Juan National Forest isn't some distant ecological problem anymore, not when the bark beetle and drought have turned what used to be unbroken green into patches of rusty needles you can watch from town. We've got a lot to worry about around here, water rights and fire season and how many new folks will show up next summer, but losing those old trees changes the whole picture of what we're protecting. You can read the studies and nod along, but standing in those woods and feeling how thin they've gotten, that's when it stops being news and starts being real.
