Ty's Take

The county disaster declaration sitting on the front page this morning is the kind of thing that tends to get buried until it's too late, so here it is plain: Archuleta County just officially acknowledged something the rest of us have been watching build for months. Whether it's the water situation, the fire risk hanging over these mountains, or the strain on local services from growth that's outpaced our ability to handle it, the declaration means the county is finally saying out loud what folks around here already know. It's a necessary step, sure, but it's also a reminder that we've been running on optimism and caffeine for too long while the hard choices pile up. The ski season's coming, the tourists are still heading to the hot springs, and life goes on, but that piece of paper signals something worth paying attention to.
