Ty's Take

The Forest Service is pushing prescribed burns through the San Juan this fall, and anybody who's watched smoke roll into town from a lightning strike knows the math they're working with: burn it controlled now or deal with something far worse when the next dry summer hits and fire moves fast enough to outrun the evacuation sirens. Two confirmed West Nile cases here in Archuleta County adds another layer to why this matters, since drought stress and wildfire aftermath tend to breed the conditions mosquitoes love. Meanwhile, LPEA's got folks thinking hard about where the power comes from and what it costs, which turns out to be the same conversation we're having about water and fire and growth. Some of this gets settled in conference rooms and some of it gets settled by weather, but none of it gets settled by pretending it's somebody else's problem.
