The school bond measure hitting the ballot this fall is going to split this town the way bonds always do, but this one's different because the stakes are actually here, not somewhere else. Eighty million dollars isn't abstract when you live in a place where you know half the families who'll be paying for it and the other half wondering if their kids will still be around to use the new buildings. The real question isn't whether Archuleta County schools need the money, it's whether we trust ourselves to spend it right, and whether we can afford not to. Folks around here have seen bond money get spent and buildings sit half-finished before. That's the conversation worth having between now and the vote.
