There's a particular kind of week in a small town where you can feel the summer starting to let go. The Thingamajig wraps up its season, the library adds a new digital service, a sculpture garden fills with music and history, and somewhere out in the San Juan National Forest, the Forest Service is responding to fire again. That last one's the thread that runs through everything else, isn't it. We've built something good here, these gathering places and institutions, and we keep building them while knowing full well the country around us is drier and meaner than it used to be. The churches and theaters and community spaces aren't distractions from that reality. They're what we do to stay rooted while keeping one eye on the ridgeline.
