You can usually tell when the mountains are running lean. This summer's drought has pushed the bears down hard, breaking into garages and tearing into anything that smells like a meal, and Colorado Parks and Wildlife is doing what they always do when hunger meets habit: reminding us that securing your garbage and your bird feeders is the difference between a close call and a tragedy nobody comes back from. But there's something else in today's notices that catches the eye, all these gatherings focused on spiritual life and mental health and community care, happening right now when folks are anxious about bears and water and what next year looks like if the snow doesn't come back. A town this size knows something the bigger papers miss: when the land gets stressed, people turn inward and toward each other at the same time. That's not weakness or distraction.
