Ty's Take
The Red Ryder Rodeo coming up over the Fourth makes you remember what this town was before the hot springs became a destination and everybody's second address. You'll see working stock contractors and families who've been doing this for generations, alongside visitors who'll snap pictures and head back to Denver by sundown. Nothing wrong with that—tourism keeps the lights on and the schools funded. But there's something worth noticing in a rodeo: it's one of the few events left where the old Pagosa and the new one occupy the same space without anybody pretending the other doesn't exist. If we could figure out that trick for water rights and zoning disputes, we'd be onto something.
