Ty's Take

There's something about the way a small paper's pages turn over from one week to the next that tells you who we are up here. This week it's the pets waiting at the shelter and the scattered briefs that don't quite fit anywhere else, the kind of items that keep a valley connected when there's no single story pulling everyone's attention the same direction. Maybe it's a horse that needs a home, or news from one of the pueblos, or word about a road crew heading up toward Brazos. In a place where everybody knows somebody who knows the animal you're reading about, the pets column isn't just filler, and those northern briefs aren't afterthoughts. They're the glue. Come October in Rio Arriba County, you take your news where you find it, and you keep your eye on what matters to your neighbor three canyons over.
