Ty's Take
There's a particular kind of winter work that brings the valley together, and it doesn't happen in any boardroom or town council meeting. When neighbors gather for a matanza, the Democrats among them and the Republicans too, you're watching something that goes back further than either party, back to when survival meant knowing how to process an animal and preserve the meat through the cold months ahead. That's the real thread holding this country together, and it's good to see people still making time for it. Meanwhile, up at the Jamboree, Martinez ran hard and placed fifth, which in a field of competitors from across a whole region says something about the caliber of young people we're raising here. But the story that should keep us awake at night is the one about wildfire. The landscape is changing, the seasons are shifting, and our forests aren't bouncing back the way they used to. That takes planning, money, and the kind of long view that doesn't fit neatly into an election cycle. Around here, we know what a big fire looks like, and we know what we stand to lose.
