Ty's Take

Fall up here comes with its own language, the kind you smell before you see it, and that's worth noticing when most of us are too busy with wood stacking and game season to pay attention. The piñon smoke starting to curl out of chimneys in Chama and Tierra Amarilla, the sage drying out on the high benches, even the dust that gets kicked up different once the monsoon finally backs off, it all adds up to a season that feels earned in this country. We spend enough time chasing what's broken or going wrong, so maybe today we just acknowledge that some of what makes this place home isn't something you can point to on a map or write into a county ordinance. Sometimes it's just the air telling you who you are.
