Garcia Richard's name on the Democratic ticket for lieutenant governor is going to land different depending on which side of the Chama you're on. Up here in Rio Arriba, where land-grant families have held political weight for generations, there's real history in seeing someone from the northern counties get that kind of backing. It's the kind of thing that gets discussed over coffee at Bode's, not because folks are suddenly paying attention to state politics, but because it actually touches home. The question people will be asking isn't so much about Garcia Richard's platform as it is whether a lieutenant governor from this part of the state remembers what water rights and grazing permits mean when she's sitting in Santa Fe.

Stephanie Garcia Richard won the Democratic Party of New Mexico's nomination for lieutenant governor in the November general election, capturing 53 percent support from voting members of the State Central Committee. The party announced final results on July 30.
