The news that a lizard lost federal protection might sound like bureaucratic noise until you remember what that lizard meant around here. The New Mexico meadow jumping mouse was listed as endangered back in 1975, and that designation shaped how water got managed, how land got used, and what kinds of conversations ranchers and land managers had to have with folks in Santa Fe and Washington. When a species comes off the list, it usually means recovery worked, which is the good outcome. But it also means the protections that came with that listing start to fade, and the burden shifts to folks on the ground to keep doing the work that brought the mouse back in the first place. Up here where every acre and every drop of water touches someone's livelihood or someone's way of life, that's worth paying attention to.
