You can drive these high roads a long time before you see another soul, which is maybe why folks up here forget how fast things can happen—how quick a mistake becomes a record, how a bad afternoon turns into something the whole valley hears about by suppertime. The woman arrested after that crash this week is somebody's neighbor, somebody's family, and that's the part that sticks with you longer than the headlines do. We don't have much traffic up here to begin with, but we've got enough of it that careless moments cost, and we've got small enough communities that when something goes wrong, everybody feels it.
