Ty's Take
Spring's late this far north, but if El Vecino's telling folks it's time to get the leafy stuff in the ground, then the soil temperature's probably right and the frost window's closing fast enough to take the chance. There's a reason that column's been running in the SUN for as long as it has—somebody up here knows what they're talking about, and people listen. This time of year the greenhouse sets at Bode's probably look picked over by now, and the gardeners who didn't start their own seeds indoors back in February are making their moves. Between the altitude and the short growing season, timing's everything in the Chama Valley—plant too early and a late freeze takes your whole crop; wait too long and you don't get enough sun before the snow comes back. If you've been meaning to turn over that plot behind the house, this is the week to stop meaning it.
