Ty's Take

Lance Fresquez told the Kiwanis Club this week what most folks on the hill already know: fire season up here isn't something you prepare for once and then forget about. It's the kind of thing that shapes how a town thinks about October, how people watch the weather in August, how you remember 2000 and 2011 every time the wind picks up. The county's emergency management coordinator has the job of making sure we're not caught flat-footed, which matters in a place built on a plateau surrounded by dry forest and surrounded by people who understand exactly what happens when preparedness fails. That's not fear-mongering, just the math of living where we do.
