Ty's Take

Don Owen Coffin made it to 97, which around here means he saw this town transform from a wartime secret into something altogether stranger, a place where Nobel laureates shop at the same grocery store as their neighbors and everybody knows somebody working up the hill. The Halloweekend coming this week, with trick-or-treaters on Main Street and the usual small-town shuffle, is the kind of thing that probably wouldn't have existed when Coffin was young, back when Los Alamos wasn't even on most maps. Now it's become one of those rituals that anchors a community built on the most unanchored ground imaginable, science and security and the constant tension between them. A power outage in Pajarito Acres reminds us how fragile things still are up here on the plateau, how quickly the ordinary rhythms of the place can snap back to precarious. Coffin's long life is worth marking, and so is the simple fact that we're still here, still trying to make a town out of extraordinary circumstances.
