Ty's Take
Betty Joan Essington spent ninety years in this life, from the Depression straight through to now, and that's a long time to watch a place change. The aquatic center keeps coming up at council meetings without getting resolved, which tells you something about how hard it is to build anything on the hill these days, and meanwhile folks are signing up for wilderness first aid courses because the mountains around here demand respect and preparation. What strikes you when you read the obits and the meeting notices together is that this town, for all its science and expertise, still comes down to the same things: keeping people safe, taking care of the ones getting older, making sure there's a place for families to gather. Not everything on a Tuesday night agenda gets decided, and that's probably fine. Some things take time.
