September's hitting us with the usual mix of infrastructure fixes and community upkeep, which is exactly how a town like this tends to operate when the summer fire season finally backs off. The state's paving NM 96, the utilities board is working through whatever challenges keep a lab town's systems running, and folks are showing up to talk about the Frijoles Fire scars up in Truchas, which matters because fire never stops mattering on the plateau. But what catches the eye is how much of this week's real work isn't happening at City Hall or in the Lab's buildings, it's happening in the neighborhoods: people submitting photos for calendars, parents volunteering for the YMCA, the arts council keeping plein air painting alive while suicide prevention gets its moment in September. You can read that as small-town noise, or you can read it as what actually holds a place together when the big systems do their job quietly. Either way, there's work to do, and people are doing it.
