The Frijoles Fire holding at 59 percent containment while interior pockets still smolder is the kind of news that keeps people on the hill from sleeping soundly these days, and Tuesday's special meeting between our County Council and the commissioners and councilors down in Española and Rio Arriba ought to matter more than it probably will. Growth pressure from the Lab pushing housing demand into the valley below us means more people living closer to the wildland interface, more fuel loads to manage, more evacuation routes that weren't built for this kind of traffic. The coyote wandering through Valles Caldera reminds us we're guests in a landscape that doesn't much care what we build or how we plan. Those fire scars from Cerro Grande and Las Conchas didn't teach us everything we needed to know about living on this plateau, but Tuesday's conversation between three separate jurisdictions might be the place where someone finally starts asking the right questions.
