You can read a lot into what a town chooses to worry about on any given week, and right now the Lab is modeling bacteriophage therapy while the state's launching another DWI campaign and firefighters are working the Frijoles Fire up in the mountains. That's Los Alamos in late August, every layer of it visible at once: the frontier of medical science running parallel to the oldest fights we still can't seem to win, and fire season breathing down our necks like it always does. The horse show's coming up Saturday, a couple of community sales, some federal work on the ranges. Normal stuff for the plateau, which mostly means we're holding our ground against the things that press in hardest, whether that's a blaze in the Jemez or something we're fighting from inside ourselves.
