The Frijoles Fire sitting at fifty-five percent containment on the plateau reminds this town why September always feels like holding your breath. We've watched what happens when these mountains burn, watched the Cerro Grande scars still visible from the roads, watched what Las Conchas took. You don't live here without that knowledge living in your bones, and right now with operations shifting toward repair work instead of active suppression, we're in that particular phase where the danger hasn't passed but the worst might be. Meanwhile, life goes on: the golf course reopens Saturday, the Mountain Club swimmers compete, the retirees gather for breakfast. This is how it works in a town built on a plateau between brilliant science and raw nature. We keep moving forward because we have to, and we keep one eye on those mountains because we learned the hard way what not watching costs.
