Ty's Take
The Frijoles Fire is sitting at just over 13,000 acres with containment creeping toward a third of the perimeter, which on the Pajarito Plateau means folks up here are watching the weather and the afternoon winds the way other towns watch interest rates. Spike camps are established, the crews know the terrain, and the Forest Service has learned a hard lesson or two since Cerro Grande took half the county's homes in 2000. Still, this is fire season on the plateau, and nobody sleeps easy until Labor Day passes and the monsoons either arrive or don't. Meanwhile, the county is holding hearings on water and gas rate increases, which tells you something about what costs money around here when you're not buying property or paying property taxes. Small town problems, continental-scale stakes.
