By Sunday evening the Frijoles Fire had run to 3,000 acres with zero containment, smoke was rolling into the plateau, and folks around here knew exactly what that meant: the memory of Cerro Grande and Las Conchas doesn't fade on the Pajarito, it just waits. The fair was still running, the Concert Association was marking 80 years, a pedestrian was killed down in White Rock, and somewhere between the ordinary rhythms of August a raven landed on a twig and somebody thought it worth documenting. This is what small-town life does in fire season, keeps moving forward while one eye stays on the ridgeline, because you have to live here and you have learned the hard way that the mountains don't always stay quiet.
