The Frijoles Fire east of Pojoaque lit up overnight, and if you've been here since 2000 or 2011, you already felt that old familiar tightness in your chest. This time the flames came somewhere else, but fire season doesn't care about county lines, and the Jemez dries out the same every August. Meanwhile, back in council chambers, the county split 3-3 on a single-use plastic ordinance and couldn't even get a tiebreaker to settle it. Small problems and large ones, playing out the way they do in a town of engineers and scientists who are good at solving equations but sometimes stumble when it comes to choosing sides on things that matter. The plateau is drying out. The season is here.
