Lightning hit the Santa Fe National Forest this week, and that's the kind of thing that gets everybody's attention up here whether they admit it or not. We've got long memories of Cerro Grande and Las Conchas, the kind of fires that change how you think about summer and August and the smell of smoke drifting across the plateau. Right now firefighters are working two lightning-caused fires near Cuba, and the forest service knows better than to assume anything about how these things will behave in our country. August is when the monsoons are supposed to show up and save us, but you don't plan your whole summer on weather that's still three weeks away. It's early in the season yet, and mostly people are trying to enjoy the time between now and when the real heat settles in.
