The Oso Canyon Fire is still smoldering in the Santa Fe National Forest while crews work the hotspots, and that's the kind of thing that makes every July and August feel a little shorter up here on the plateau. Two decades past Cerro Grande and a decade past Las Conchas, and the memory of those fires hasn't faded one bit in this town. The uncrewed aircraft doing reconnaissance flights is state-of-the-art fire management, which tracks with who we are out here, but the real message is simpler: fire season isn't something we mark on a calendar anymore. It's a condition we live in from now until the snow comes.
