Fire season hit us hard enough in 2000 and 2011 that this town doesn't take the Oso Canyon fire west of Española lightly, even if it's still miles away and the county just lifted restrictions. The crews working that rough terrain above the valley know what's at stake for everyone up here on the plateau, and Senator Heinrich pushing for more federal wildfire money gets why New Mexico's fire season isn't some distant problem we read about. The scammers spoofing Atomic City Transit can wait in line, the school board's filling vacancies, and yeah, Meagan Selis is getting promoted at the middle school, but right now half the region's watching smoke and sky conditions the way a farmer watches clouds in June. That's not paranoia around here. That's memory.
