The Lab keeps beating the drum about career pathways for the next generation—good work, necessary work—but it's worth asking whether Los Alamos County is actually building the kind of place young people want to stay in once they're trained up. Summer concerts at the Pond, theater under the stars, a shelter dog waiting for a home: these aren't luxuries in a town built on splitting atoms. They're the reason anybody chooses to raise kids here instead of taking their PhD somewhere cheaper and sunnier. The plateau's got the brains. Turns out it needs a little more heart to keep them around.
