We lost a couple of good ones this week—David Gardner, who spent most of his life on the Hill, and Joe Myers down in White Rock—and that's the kind of news that reminds you this town, for all its laboratories and equations and world-changing work, runs on the same human clock as everywhere else. The funerals will fill up with neighbors who knew them through decades of Cerro Grande cleanup, community meetings, or just running into each other at the grocery store, and that matters more than any state investment or summer theater production, important as those things are. Los Alamos gets written about for what it created back in 1945, but it's kept going all these years because of people like Gardner and Myers who showed up and stayed put. That's the real story.
