Ty's Take

Robert Trujillo was 47 when he died, and Casey Luster was 32, and that's the kind of year we're having up here on the plateau—the kind where you go to the store and run into someone's kid grown up, and by next week you're reading their name in the back pages. The Lab brings brilliant people to Los Alamos, people solving problems the rest of the world doesn't even know exist yet, but it doesn't keep anyone from the ordinary heartbreaks that take people down too young. Paige Trujillo made it to the world championships—that's the other side of this town, the side that shows up and competes and reminds us why we stick it out up here. But you notice both stories. You have to.
