Ty's Take
Nancy Carol Coates made it to 84, which in these parts means she saw the valley change from something you could cross on horseback to what it is now, all strip malls and subdivisions creeping out where pecan orchards used to be. The Bulletin's obituary doesn't say much beyond the basics, but that's the thing about a long life in one place, isn't it. The real story isn't what the paper prints. It's what she knew, who she knew, what got built and what got paved over on her watch. Las Cruces lost another person who remembers when it was smaller.
