Carol Ann Knapp Foreman and Clarence Villemez both knew this valley long enough to watch it grow from something you could hold in your hand to something that keeps slipping through your fingers. The Bulletin's obits this week read like a roster of people who actually built things here, who put down roots when Las Cruces was still figuring out who it wanted to be. There's a piece in that somewhere about what we lose when the old-timers go, the institutional memory that doesn't make the news until it's gone. Meanwhile, somebody's running through a lifetime of golf rounds and handmade jewelry, two things that ask a person to show up and do the work day after day. That's the Las Cruces story too, isn't it?
