Bernie Carrillo made it to 92, which in this valley means you saw the whole thing change, the way the river got fought over and the city grew out past the pecan orchards where his people worked. That's the kind of life you don't get much anymore, roots going down through eight or nine decades of actual place. Meanwhile, down the street, some young person's got a company called Threaded Joy and is building something from nothing, which is exactly how it's supposed to work if we're lucky enough to keep attracting people who still believe you can do that here. Both stories say something true about Las Cruces, if you're paying attention, one about continuity and the other about hunger. The valley needs both kinds.
