Ty's Take

Carol Ann Knapp Foreman, Clarence Villemez, Shannyn Caldwell, Timothy Joseph Hourigan—four names in the paper this week, four people who lived their lives in this valley and left it different than they found it, the way it works here. You don't get to know what Carol Ann did for forty years or what Clare built with his hands or what Shannyn meant to the people who called her friend, not from a death notice, but that's the thing about a town like Las Cruces—you run into the story later, at the grocery store or church or standing in the Mesilla Plaza, when someone tells you what they remember. The plushies and the prints, the small creative things people are making in their garages and studios, that's the other half of the week's news, and maybe it says something that while we're saying goodbye to four of our own, somebody else is still here figuring out how to make something bright. That's how it balances out.
