Ty's Take
Most weeks in July, the valley empties out a little—folks heading to the mountains to escape the heat, or down to visit family across the line in Juárez. The obits page tells you who stayed, who made it through another season tending pecan trees or running cattle in weather that doesn't forgive mistakes. Shannyn Caldwell and Timothy Joseph Hourigan both belonged to this place long enough to leave it changed. In a town that grows the way Las Cruces grows, we don't always know the names behind the life-long contributions until we're reading them on a Tuesday morning. That's the cost of expansion—all these new faces coming in, and sometimes not noticing the ones who built the roads they're driving on.
