Ty's Take

Fire swept through the Eldridge area yesterday fast enough that folks didn't have much time to think, which is exactly how these things go when wind gets hold of a dry hillside this time of year. The evacuation orders came down and people moved, which is the part that works when everybody's practiced it and the county's got their routes figured out. We'll see what the final count looks like once the smoke clears, but the fact that it ran large enough to push residents out of their homes in that stretch tells you the conditions are tight right now. These fires have a way of reminding us that the lake region's beauty sits on ground that can turn dangerous in a hurry, and it's worth remembering when you're out in the woods or even just watching the tree line from your dock.
