Labor Day weekend hits different when you're counting down to it on a Thursday morning. Gas prices are what they are, the fireworks are set, Tucker's has new menu items worth trying, and there's an indie-folk show at the Exchange if you want to spend your evening somewhere other than a dock. But a man from Sunrise Beach won't be doing any of that, and neither will the people who knew him. Highway 135 took him on what should have been an ordinary trip, and now his family's dealing with the kind of loss that doesn't care about long weekends or good weather. Safe driving home from wherever you end up this weekend isn't just a saying around here, not anymore.
